The 2010 Trip was a great success. Scroll below this photo of the Loon Lake outlet and read and see more about  it.

The reservoir was slush free - the winds were light - the temperatures were mild - what's not to like?

Jack, Davey K and BigBob skiied in on the reservoir in bright sunlight with a nice breeze at their backs.  Very few snowmobiles were anywhere about.  The parking lot was not plowed out to the same dimensions as it has been in other years.  All vehicles had to park in the middle of the lot - no room to use the edges.

Neal, Alan and Albert came in across the reservoir on Saturday. We had skied up the trail to Burnt Mountain and when we came down we went by the Norridgewock and found them there. We joined them for a few brews and some lunch.

We spend a lot of our time wandering around within the boundaries of the following topo map.

Here's a selection of photos that I took - in chronological order.  I will put some links to video clips below.

We've recently returned from a trip with perhaps the best weather and skiing conditions we've ever had.  Light winds and lots of sun.  Snow everywhere with a ski supporting crust and almost no slush on the reservoir.

We skiied on routes that we have never tried before.  We went out to the Bath tubs along the South Branch but then came home "over the hill" by Scott's place.  We had a rendezvous at Mud Lake with groups coming from opposite directions and followed some flagging along a great route back to the Six Mile Road.  We put in more miles along the reservoir than nearly any other trip.  We also saw some other skiers.  That hasn't happened for a long time!

I've put the photos on the web.  There are over two pages of index photos.  Click on any one of interest once, twice or three times and it will "grow".  There are some "panoramic" photos, too.  With three photos "stitched" together.

Here's the link to those photos.

Next thing you know we are scattered after our great long weekend in Beaver River.  One to North Carolina, two to New York, the rest to Massachusetts and Connecticut.  Just getting to Beaver River was a little tricky this year.  An ice storm made driving to meet the good Dr. a little dicey.  His flight was delayed in leaving the DC area as they waited for Albany conditions to improve.

We did hit some good fortune with a 1/2 price special at the Big Moose Inn.  1/2 price for rooms, food in the bar and drinks.  Most of the time I would hear about that the day after the special ended.

Jack joined us Thursday morning at the Big Moose Inn and we were able to lighten the load that we were carrying by dropping some food and luggage in a Thompson vehicle near the tracks.  Temperatures in the 20s and very light snowmobile traffic made the ski in enjoyable.

Friday it was windier with some snow squalls.  We broke trail to the beaver dams on the way to the top of Big Burnt Mtn and then turned north to the 6 Mile Rd - hitting it just after Neal and Alan had passed.  Albert took a more adventuresome route on the reservoir.  He went part way by kite power.  The power of the kite was a bit too much at one point and he tucked his kites away, bandaged up the hand injured by the kite strings and skiied the rest of the way towing his sled.

Saturday we completed the ascent of Big Burnt Mtn.  3 or 4 tough hours up and about 1 hour down.  Neal did some amazing skiing with just one arm the whole trip as he rests his wrist that was injured in a fall while skiing about 5 or 6 weeks ago.

Sunday we went across the reservoir to explore Gun Harbor. We thought we might go up along the Gun Harbor Brook drainage but didn't do a great job of locating the brook.  Rain showers sent us back toward the camp where we rested up, played pitch and took a sauna.

The rain fell heavily over the night and things were pretty wet in the morning.  Jack skiied out alone and we went to the Norridgewock for breakfast.  We talked to the Thompson's about the conditions and they offered to let us ski a shorter distance along the tracks and borrow a vehicle to move our gear and ourselves to Stillwater.  It all worked out in the end.

And before you can say, "Huckle buckle bean stalk" it is 2008. Worse yet we have never provided links to some of the best folks in the Stillwater Reservoir area. - First to the Norridgewock  III with their site listed below

and also to hard working Scott Thompson - always working to provide us with better and more dependable access to Beaver River - his site is listed below

2/24/07 A wonderful trip this year. I'm surprised by how old we look in these photos. I k=know there is a little less skip in our kick but that we look it is new. Neal Bob

2/26/06 What a great weekend next year we'll ski to Cranberry lake. Maybe there is an interesting overnight ski. We could set out depots of food and water for the return trip as long as we don't fall through the ice. or spend to long parking it.. Neal

2/18/06 Around 8:30 in the morning. The calm after the storm. A beautiful sun dog graces the morning sky.

Toward the back of the camp Friday's storm had something else for us. A fair sized tree broke off and struck the camp. The tree broke again near the top and slid off the camp in two pieces.

2/16 Thanks to Big Bob for the intro. to wiki !!

2/14 Albert, Thanks for the contribution!! You have no reason to question your choice of fashion. Beaver River is beyond those considerations. I hope that you get good winds to try the kite. I wonder why they call it a traction kite? I thought that you got traction from the surface not from the wind? The bagel and lox breakfast sounds great. Big Bob

2/12 Thanks Big Bob for setting this up. It confirms my belief that I am so technologically far behind the times that I will never, ever catch up. Looking at the pictures from last year I see I have the same problem with fashion. So it goes. I hope the weather holds for a midnight death ski on Thursday so I can say I did it once. I was going to do the bagel and lox breakfast again unless anyone wants something different. Thanks for including me again. I have purchased a traction kite and hope to learn how not to kill myself with it up there on the res. Safe travels y'all. Albert

Feb. 8: Skiers check out this how to survive after falling through the ice video clip - Very helpful:

Great video on ice safety courtesy of Dave Derrick of WES. As Dave noted in his email: The good Dr. is crazy!! But this is very interesting and explains the body reactions to extreme cold and how to not panic and overcome them, and actually how much time you do have to save yourself.

So who's coming to ski? Davey K and I are going in Thursday Feb 16th.

Talk to you later,

BIGBOB

Folks,

One other reason to use this format is the lovely pictures - Who are those handsome outdoorsmen anyway????

Jack

Neal,

Great to hear that Alan and Albert are making the trip again.

As for the Wiki, I thought that we could try this. It seemed easier than sorting through a string of emails and we could extend by making other pages about our various expeditions from the Salo Camp... if we choose to do so.

Bob

Jack,

Thanks for making that first entry!!

The guy at Stillwater says that the ice on the res is fine... the level rose a few weeks ago but some cold weather after the rise tightened things up nicely. Cold weather is expected to move in for our trip this year.

Big Bob

Jack checking in Thursday Morning: Big Bob does it again and makes it easy for us to "get on the same page"

My plan this year is to come in early Friday and to stay through Monday. This will be my first time in many years staying until Monday! No one has been up to the camp since hunting season, so there is a good supply of wood on the porch and the Norse gods willing the camp should be in good shape for Big Moose Inn - annual Valentine's day sweathearts to open up. I have been wondering if the reservoir is safe to ski on since the weather has been so warm!

Jon and I will be at my brother Tom's on Saturday. His daughter and her boyfriend are moving to Wyoming (from N. Carolina). She is a geographer - cartographer and has taken a job with an energy company out West so Tom is having a going away weekend for her before she heads out West.

All is well here. I plan on bringing along some vension and lamb for the trip and will think through what other goodies might be appreciated. Any suggestions on shared food purchasing are welcomed! Hopefully we will get some good snow between now and then. Safe travels everyone and will see you soon...

Jack

2/2/06

Alan Albert and I are looking at a midnight death march, coming in on Thurs evening. We'll wait to make final decision determined by the weather. so if we don't do thur we'll let you know Jack and ski in with you Fri.We'll stay till Mon. I've had to stretch my skiing a little her.e just able to do the edges around the field this morning. I've probably had thirty days of my morning meditation on skis. Albert and I have been checking the weather from work. There's wi fi at the house. N why this rather than just email?
